Google I/O 2023 Highlights: Unveiling the Power of Generative AI

Google I/O 2023 showcased an exciting array of advancements in generative AI, promising a remarkable leap forward in AI capabilities and user experience. Google's commitment to delivering these innovations soon has created anticipation among users. Let's delve into some of these cutting-edge "next-gen" AI products, including their applications in Google Search and other Google offerings.

Enhanced Search Experience with Generative AI

Google Search takes center stage with its latest update. Last month, Google introduced the Search Generative Experience to subscribers of the Search Lab program. These fortunate users had the opportunity to explore generative search features such as AI-generated snapshots based on PALM2, conversational capabilities from SGE, and more.

With the recent update, Google expands the capabilities of AI-generated snapshots even further. Users can now leverage generative AI to search for hotels, restaurants, travel destinations, and more. By extracting key data from multiple sources and providing concise summaries, Google facilitates convenient access to information. Additionally, users can engage in conversations with Google, expanding on their queries or posing follow-up questions, leveraging the conversational mode of SGE.

Google Bard: Empowering Generative Search

Building upon the foundation of Bard, Google's Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM2), and Multitask Unified Model (MUM), the next update focuses on Google Bard. After its initial early access release in March, Bard has evolved significantly during Google I/O 2023, showcasing the tremendous potential Google brings to the field of AI.

Bard has now become even smarter by introducing the ability to generate results based on "image prompts." Early adopters of SGE have already experienced this feature firsthand. With image prompts, users can receive helpful responses from Bard accompanied by visual cues. For instance, users can ask Bard to suggest popular tourist attractions in Mexico, and Bard will provide a summarized response complete with pictorial representations. Users can even upload their own images and generate text prompts related to them. For instance, submitting an image of three dogs and ask Bard to generate a funny caption for it.

AI-Powered Shopping Assistance

When it comes to shopping using Google Search, AI serves as your virtual shopping assistant. The first implementation focuses on a virtual try-on tool. Users can now visualize how their chosen items translate into real-world scenarios. Virtual avatars representing models of diverse skin types, body types, and more enable users to see how items drape, fold, cling, stretch, and create wrinkles and shadows in various poses. This feature aims to replicate the experience of being in a physical store and is currently available in the United States only.

Additionally, Google introduces Guided Refinement, a feature that offers granular customization options during the shopping process. With Guided Refinement, users can experience the sensation of shopping in a physical store, enhancing their overall shopping experience.

AI Empowering Google Lens and Google Maps

Google Lens integrates AI capabilities to aid users in searching for skin conditions. The new "Find My Skin" feature allows users to take pictures and search for visual matches related to their skin, nails, and hair.

Meanwhile, Google Maps introduces a new AI-based feature called Immersive View. This feature provides multidimensional 3D-mapped visualizations of destinations and routes. Users can explore intricate details along their travel routes, including trees, available restaurants, gas stations on specific sides of the road, and more.

As part of the Immersive View update, Google Maps also offers a "time travel" aspect. Users can now access advance information about the time, temperature, weather conditions, and traffic conditions at their destination. For example, if the arrival time in San Francisco is set for 12 pm, users can obtain detailed weather and traffic forecasts as early as 9 am. This predictive data amalgamates pre-existing information and AI capabilities to provide comprehensive insights.
