While playing games is incredibly fun but when it starts to lag and FPS drops it gets annoying. So in this article, there are some solutions and recommendations you can try out to enjoy your games more smoothly.

Common things to ensure:

  • Your hardware and software are meeting the minimum requirements to play the game.

Each game has its specific minimum requirements.

  • Do not multi-task while playing. Open only the game you are playing to get the most power of your device to the game. This would avoid issues like FPS drop.
  • Clean your hardware like a cooling fan, to avoid dust and overheating of the CPU.
  • Use a good internet connection, generally a wired connection - Ethernet.
  • Configure your in-game graphic settings according to your hardware. If you have a low-end PC then higher graphic settings may affect your game and can also result in system crashes.

Fix FPS drop (issue) in Windows 10 with these steps:

Check your Network connection(Internet speed):

If you are playing an online game and experiencing FPS drops, I advise you to check your network speed once.

In most cases, it is not your bandwidth speed that matters ( it can be affected to some extent, though ), but rather the latency of the data package. Latency(ping) is measured in milliseconds, and it indicates a delay between the user and the network itself.

In general, the larger the latency, the lower the game performance will be. On the Speedtest website, you can examine your latency. To enjoy the online games smoothly, you will require less than 50 ms of ping/latency

It is recommended to use an ethernet connection (Wired) to reduce latency and increase internet speed!

But, if you are planning to continue with Wi-Fi (Wireless), then ensure you are meeting the least network requirements.

Note: If you are having problems with connecting to Wi-Fi, consider troubleshooting. Go to the control panel -->troubleshooting --> Network and Internet, to troubleshoot.

Switch off Game DVR:

Go to Settings > Gaming > Game DVR(Captures) to turn off Game DVR. Make sure the option "Record in the background while I'm playing a game" is turned off.

Note: You can still start a manual recording from the Game Bar, but Windows 10 won't automatically record anything in the background.

Update the Graphics card driver:

  • Press the Win key + X to open the device manager
  • Now click Display adapters on the Device Manager window.
  • Right-click the listed graphics card to open the context menu, and select the Update driver option.
  • Select the Search automatically for the updated driver software option.
  • If Windows finds anything, follow the further guidelines to install the driver.

Note: Don't Forget to restart your device after installation.

Moreover, you can also use software like Driver booster. To ensure you have the best drivers installed.

Run troubleshooter for other settings:

  • Go to the Control panel by searching “control panel” in the windows search.
  • Select "large icons" options.
  • Now, select troubleshooting and troubleshoot the problem which you think you are facing in the game

Enable game mode:

Step 1:

  • Start your game and press the Win Key + g key combination, it will open the game bar.
  • Go to the settings option in the game bar
  • Check the box beside the option "Remember this is a game"

Step 2:

  • Go to settings and search for "Game mode settings"
  • Then ensure that the Game mode option is enabled (ON)

Tweak your display settings:

Make sure you are using the highest frame rate option your monitor can offer.  If your monitor has a high refresh rate of 144Hz or more, you must first enable that refresh rate in Windows before you can enjoy smoother gameplay.

Set your Refresh Rate as high as it will go in Settings > System > Display > Advanced Display Settings. You could also look at the gaming features built into your monitor, such as the Overdrive feature, which decreases motion blur. You may also enable supersampling in your graphics driver options for clearer visuals if you have a powerful graphics card. You'll also want to set up HDR if your display supports it.

Use external software to boost your Game FPS:

Use Razer software to optimize FPS and boost your games.

  • Download the software and create an account (FREE)
  • Now navigate to the option named "Boost" and configure its settings as you prefer then click on "Boost now".

Click on "Boost"

Do this before you start your game, and after you start your windows.

Note: You can add it to startup apps to let it start along with your Windows, which will save your time and effort.

It will boost your game performance incredibly.

Conclusion:

If this all doesn’t work, then consider:

  • Updating Windows by going to settings --> updates and security --> check for updates. If there are any updates available, then download and install updates.
  • Re-installing game
  • Invest in powerful hardware like increasing RAM, using an SSD instead of an HDD, and more...
